17 Feb Do You Plan 3 Years In Advance? Gary Vaynerchuk Does. Maybe You Should Too.
Ever since I heard the firsthand story of how Gary Vaynerchuk exploded the annual sales for his father’s liquor store sales from $3 million to $60 million in five years, I have been a huge fan of his.
Since then GaryVee (as his fanatics call him), has gone on to write three bestselling books, launched one of the hottest digital agencies on the planet (VaynerMedia), and is now one of the most sought after speakers on earth (especially when it comes to using technology to transform the business of sales and marketing).
So . . . late last night while poking around on the ‘Net I got a notification that the @AskGaryVeeBook Twitter account had liked a tweet I had sent out earlier in the day. Not a big deal, as I’d written that I had pre-ordered GaryVee’s new book and was looking forward to reading and learning from it.
Here’s a screengrab of the tweet I sent.
Funny thing was that after getting the notification I realized that there was actually a Twitter account named @AskGaryVeeBook. Who knew?!?!
So I clicked over to it and was checking it out when a bit of information FLEW OFF THE SCREEN & SMACKED ME IN THE FACE!
Here’s what I saw:
Do you plan three years in advance? I don’t.
In his book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Dr. Stephen R. Covey describes the 2nd Habit as the ability to create twice. In other words,
First plan, then do.
To be clear, I have done some long-range, personal planning before. In fact, my most recent exercise in this process happened after I re-read The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. Ironic, huh?
But . . . have I been as dedicated to the process as I could or should have been? No way.
And yet, there it was sitting right in front of my eyes staring back at me: Vaynerchuk had at least the beginnings of a plan about writing a book titled #AskGaryVeeBook nearly three years prior to its publish date. In fact, he snagged the @AskGaryVeeBook Twitter account more than a year before he launched the Ask Gary Vee show on his YouTube channel.
Talk about advance planning. And patience.
So now my question to you is this:
What will you do differently (if anything), now that you have this clue (courtesy of Gary Vaynerchuk)?
Me? I’m going to do some long-range planning later today and over this coming weekend, both professionally and personally.
In the meantime, I leave this shoutout for @GaryVee:
Thanks for the hint on achieving long-term success, Gary. I will put it to good use.
