22 Feb MICRO NUCLEAR PLANT COMING TO IDAHO
SUMMARY: A stealthy California firm, Oklo, was just approved by the U.S. Department of Energy to build a 1/4-acre, 1.5-megawatt nuclear power “plant” somewhere in Idaho
After years of behind-the-scenes planning, experimentation and government negotiations, Oklo Inc has finally emerged from years of #stealth mode to announce plans to build a tiny 1.5-megawatt nuclear #power plant on 1/4-acre of Idaho National Laboratory land located somewhere in the state.
I was intrigued earlier today when I stumbled across a #socialmedia mention that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) had issued #Oklo a site use permit: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20191210005474/en/.
However, the Oklo Website is just a landing page.
So from an information-gathering standpoint, the Oklo Website is absolutely useless.
But I’m a a straight-up #cleanenergy fan; hence, I started digging.
Turns out the #Sunnyvale, #California firm has been working with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for years: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20191202005499/en/Oklo-Announces-Aurora-Advanced-Fission-Clean-Energy.
What’s intriguing is that the plans Oklo have drawn up show it using #nuclearwaste as its fuel source, specifically “High-assay, low-enriched uranium (HALEU).”
And if it’s successful, the Oklo project named Aurora will generate enough #energy from its tiny nuclear reactor to power 1,000 homes for 20 years without being refueled!
Sounds awesome, right?!?!
So what do you think?
Stealth Mode Marketing Thoughts
As someone who has used #stealthmode #marketing and #publicity #strategies in the past, I find Oklo’s all under-the-covers approach to marketing fascinating.
In my experience, companies typically turn to a stealthy approach because they believe that all or part of what they are working on needs to be kept hidden from view until that’s no longer necessary.
Often that’s because executive leadership believes there is one or more competitors in the industry that might try and steal their ideas before they can be fully developed.
Conversely (and this is what I did when I joined MULTIVOICE), the desire may be to build interest and/or create Buzz prior to a launch.
And type approach appears to be the strategy that Oklo has taken with
- A say nothing Website,
- A handful of publicly available minimalist filings with a few government agencies,
- Modest postings on a few social media accounts, and
- A couple of recently published news releases.
That’s it.
And yeah, that’s a classic Stealth Mode approach to marketing.
